Aubrey, your words are always a balm to my soul— thank you. I have also wrestled with this verse when well-meaning people have shared it with me whilst in the pits of grief; it is only now becoming something that brings me comfort as I have come to a similar understanding: God is working through even the most horrific circumstances to make us more like Jesus— not to make our lives more attractive or comfortable or outwardly successful or beautiful (even though this is what we’d like to believe!)— but inwardly transforming us, for His glory, for our hearts, and for others, and it is this that is truly good.
